A year ago today are hearts were broken. 5 days before Christmas we had learned that our unborn son's heart did not develop properly and would require multiple surgeries to live. It is a day I will never forget. I can still hear the doctors voice, see her expression and feel the tears swell up in me. I was scared, terrified, and felt so alone. Christmas was hard last year...life was hard last year. I tried to stay together on the outside but on the inside I was an emotional mess.
This year is much different. My heart still hurts when I think about the reality of Stephen's condition, and at times I shed tears, but I know how fortunate we are to have him in our lives and I find comfort in the hope that comes from the Christmas story. I am amazed that our savior humbled himself and came to earth as a baby. Christ came in human form to redeem humanity. He came to serve, not to be served. The Christmas season renews our faith in the hope of our savior and all that he accomplished. He conquered death, suffering, and pain. The victory is guaranteed. I will always pray for Stephen's heart to be completely healed but I pray with confidence knowing that one day it will be made whole...if not in this life then at the resurrection. That is the hope of Christmas. Christ our Savior brings us joy and hope through our sufferings.
Another aspect of the Christmas story that has encouraged me this season has been Mary's faith and her trust in God. As a mother I am amazed at the task that was given to her. She was to deliver, care for and raise the very son of God. After Stephen's first surgery I remember feeling like I was holding my own little miracle. I can't even fathom how she felt when she held and kissed Jesus. The words to the song "Mary, did you know?" combine our saviors divinity and humanity so beautifully...and bring me tears every time.
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day walk on water?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will save our sons and daughters?
Did you know that your baby boy has come to make you new?
This child that you've delivered, will soon deliver you.
Mary did you know that your baby boy will give sight to a blind man?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will calm a storm with his hand?
Did you know that your baby boy has walked where angels trod?
And when you kiss your little baby, you have kissed the face of God.
The blind will see, the deaf will hear and the dead will live again.
The lame will leap, the dumb will speak, the praises of the lamb.
Mary did you know that your baby boy is Lord of all creation?
Mary did you know that your baby boy will one day rule the nations?
Did you know that your baby boy is heaven's perfect Lamb?
This sleeping child you're holding is the great I Am.
The lyrics are so beautiful and resonate to my core. Because Christ came the blind will see, the deaf will hear and those with half a heart will be made whole. I gave birth to my little hero but Mary gave birth to her savior. She kissed the face of God. I can only imagine the joy she felt as she wrapped Jesus in cloths and the pain she felt as he was being nailed to the cross. There are so many Biblical heros we look up to, and this Christmas season Mary is mine. There is a reason that God chose her to bring about the birth of Christ. She wasn't randomly selected but was handpicked by God for her faith. She chose to trust God even when it seemed unfathomable. Can you imagine being told you were going to become pregnant with God's child? What a scandal that would have been. Can you imagine trying to explain that to your fiance, family, friends? She was a women of faith and courage and surely is blessed among women.
So tomorrow as we go down for a sedated echo I will inevitably have to remind myself of these truths. I know how fragile this life is and how quickly things can change. I am thankful for Christmas. I love celebrating our savior's birth and I am in awe that God loved us so much that he chose to come down from heaven and live as we do to be the atonement for our sins.
A year ago I questioned why? Why us? Why Stephen? I can't say that those questions don't pop up time to time but this year I am saying Thank You. Thank You for life, thank you God for your Son, thank you for my incredible family and thank you for Stephen and his special heart.
MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!!
